Talk money week: financial education for all

Every November, MAPs Talk Money Week encourages people to open up about their finances to improve their financial wellbeing.

Last year’s theme ‘do one thing’ returns, giving companies of all sizes another opportunity to make an impact with one small action. In our industry, this week is the perfect chance to share the value of your total reward offering and empower colleagues to invest in their financial futures.

Whether you focus on your workplace pension, share plans or employee benefits, by getting people thinking and talking about money, you can have a positive impact on their lives.

Talk Money Week is supported by NHS Trusts across the UK, charities including Citizens Advice and Money and Mental Health, and various government departments.

Talk about pensions

Host a webinar or in-person event and invite a pensions expert to demystify workplace pensions. Not everyone will understand their pension or tax liabilities despite paying into it each month, so it’s worth providing opportunities for colleagues to learn more about their retirement savings. From debunking common pension myths, to exploring the long-term benefits of having a healthy pension pot, your colleagues could find this session to be a valuable experience.

Talk about share ownership

Use this week to educate colleagues about your share plan. Perhaps your communications have gone quiet over the last few months, or you have another joining window opening soon. Run a session on everything they need to know, how and when to join, and what the benefits and risks are. Share plans are complex and people won’t join unless they understand what’s in it for them, so get talking! Remember to ask for feedback from existing participants to add leverage to your messaging, both reassuring and inspiring others to join.

Talk about benefits

Do you offer money-saving, purse-friendly benefits that your colleagues could benefit from? Perhaps you have family-friendly benefits to make life easier for parents, or discounted courses for learning and development. There’s no better time to shout about them than now. Educate your colleagues on how they can make the most out of your benefits offering.
